Lawmakers in the United States have passed legislation aimed at reducing energy costs through a number of means, including extending daylight saving time.

Starting in 2007, daylight saving time in the U.S.:

  • starts on the second Sunday in March, and

  • ends on the first Sunday in November

Presently in Ontario, daylight saving time:

  • starts on the first Sunday in April, and

  • ends on the last Sunday in October

Ontario now needs to decide whether or not to extend daylight saving time to be in sync with the U.S.

For the government to make an informed choice and decide in the best interests of all Ontarians, David Zimmer, parliamentary assistant to the Attorney General, has been examining the benefits and drawbacks of extending daylight saving time.

Mr. Zimmer is leading an inter-ministerial committee to discuss all possible affected areas. He will also meet with various interested stakeholders, as well as municipal, provincial, federal, and U.S. government representatives.

Members of the public are encouraged to send comments and opinions by sending an e-mail to daylightsaving@jus.gov.on.ca.

Please note that regardless of the Ontario government's decision, the TSX may choose to open and close with the NYSE. If this happens, the FundSERV network will continue to match the TSX's trading times.
