The great pitcher, Nolan Ryan, once said: "One of the beautiful things about baseball is that every once in a while you come into a situation where you want to, and where you have to, reach down and prove something." That moment came for the FundSERV Coyotes when the playoffs for the Toronto Mutual Fund Softball League began.

With a regular season record of five wins and seven losses, the Coyotes clinched the eighth and final playoff spot. The team faced the number one ranked CIBC Mellon Heads in the first round. This match-up was a big challenge for the team as they split their regular season series, each having won one game, but the Coyotes defeated them to move on to the semi-finals.

"Our team really started to gel towards the end of the season," says Sonia Furtado, Coyotes manager. "We want to carry that momentum into the playoffs."

The season has been quite eventful with some nail-biting games, close calls and one trip to the hospital. In a play that was worthy of the blooper reel, Rick Ambrozic, operations — senior technical support/UAT analyst by day and outfielder by night, got tangled up with the first baseman while running between first and second base. Despite his best attempt to avoid the collision, Rick's face ended up doing a face plant in the hard infield at Moss Park.

The Coyotes have been very spirited this season in their bid for a spot in the playoffs. Despite the competition, however, they always remember to have fun with themselves and the other teams. "Your team is by far the nicest and most sportsmanlike team we have played against all season," says Kerry Dietrich, Wachovia Loan Sharks manager. "We didn't even mind losing to you."

With the summer quickly changing into fall, the Coyotes are geared up to make a run at the Toronto Mutual Fund Softball League title. Check out www.tmfsl.com to keep an eye on the pennant race.
