Retirement often conjures up images of sunshine, Muskoka chairs and long, leisurely days perfecting the proverbial golf swing. Not so for Alan Hutton, though, who is retiring after six years as the president and CEO of FundSERV Inc. and nine years on its board of directors. You can count on him to be just as busy and productive as ever.

On the business side, Hutton will continue to sit on the boards of companies including Cygnal Technologies and Delta Systems Inc., contributing to their strategy and helping

fulfill their governance needs. He was also recently appointed to NexGen Financial's independent review committee (IRC).

On the home front Hutton is trying to encourage his children to leave the nest. He is willing to teach them to fly but is not ready to buy them a plane. As commodore of the Muskoka Lakes Association and its oldest officer, in both senses, he will continue his efforts to protect and preserve the wonders of nature.

Closer to his heart, though, is his long-running interest in air quality. Hutton was president of the Canadian Coalition on Acid Rain and more recently has been working on a project with the Ontario Medical Association to accurately assess the illness cost of air pollution (ICAP). "It's a highly sophisticated model that combines regional economic, demographic and environmental data to determine the number of premature deaths, increased healthcare costs and lost productivity. People can use the reports to further the debate about carbon use and the inevitable emissions," explains Hutton. "This model helps to quantify the adverse consequences of our current energy indulgence."

He hopes to tie this into his role on the advisory council of the University of British Columbia's applied science faculty. His vision is to make use of UBC's environmental interest to establish a national centre of excellence for ICAP.

Hutton's competitive nature isn't limited to business and academia. "Whether he's skiing, sailing or playing squash, the man is in it to win," says Amir Jafri, FundSERV's vice president of technology, "On both a personal and a professional level, it's become my life's ambition to beat him just once at squash!"

During Hutton's tenure as FundSERV's president, the Company faced several difficult challenges, such as the 9/11 terrorist attacks in 2001, the Northeast Blackout of 2003 and the late trading and market timing scandals in the United States. Norm Graham, board member and past chair, says, "Under Alan's leadership, the FundSERV team was proactive in dealing appropriately and efficiently with the industry emergencies that arose."

FundSERV has matured and grown in size and stature, and is recognized as an integral part of the investment fund industry. Frank Vree, former CFO of FundSERV says, "Alan played a big role in putting FundSERV on the map. Through his leadership and high visibility, he ensured the company became well known and well respected in the industry. "I enjoyed working with him; we made a good team. I wish him all the best for the next chapter of his active life."

With Brian Gore taking the helm on September 1, Hutton is confident the company will continue to advance its strategic objectives. "FundSERV is in very good hands going forward," says Hutton. "Brian has a long history with FundSERV and a thorough understanding of the business."

Even though Hutton is looking forward to the next stage of his life, he will miss the camaraderie and relationships he has built with his colleagues at FundSERV and within the industry, and will think of them often.

"Over the years I've worked with many outstanding people and established some very solid friendships. I want to thank all my colleagues for their hard work and dedication during my tenure. Their support has led to FundSERV's success, and I have no doubt they will continue to provide the highest quality of service under Brian's direction."

Hutton's last day as president and CEO was at the end of August, but he will remain with FundSERV on a consulting basis until the end of year to assist Gore with the transition.
